Your Questions, Our Answers

We have compiled the most frequently asked questions about anonymous burial in NRW for you.

What is an anonymous burial?

In an anonymous burial, the deceased is interred without a name marker in a communal grave field. The exact burial plot is not disclosed to the relatives. There is no individual gravestone and no option for grave maintenance. This form of burial is often chosen by people who do not wish to burden anyone with the care of a grave.

How much does an anonymous burial in NRW cost?

The costs for an anonymous burial in NRW start from 795 euros for an anonymous urn burial. A quiet burial is available from 950 euros, and an anonymous ground burial from 1,500 euros. The exact costs depend on the chosen city and the respective cemetery. All our prices include collection, transfer, cremation, urn, burial and the handling of all formalities.

How long does the entire process take?

As a rule, the entire process from initial contact to burial takes 5 to 10 working days. For a cremation burial, a mandatory waiting period of at least 48 hours must be observed. The urn burial can then take place within a few days after cremation. For a ground burial, the interment must take place within 10 days of death.

Can relatives attend the burial?

In a strictly anonymous burial, the presence of relatives is generally not intended. The cemetery determines the time of burial and the relatives are not informed. If you wish for a burial with a small group, we recommend a quiet burial from 950 euros, where the attendance of relatives is possible.

Where does the burial take place?

The burial takes place at a municipal cemetery in the city of your choice in North Rhine-Westphalia. Every municipal cemetery has an anonymous communal grave field. The exact plot within this field is not disclosed in an anonymous burial.

What is the difference between anonymous and semi-anonymous?

In an anonymous burial, there is no name marker and the exact burial plot is not disclosed. In a semi-anonymous (or partially anonymous) burial, the name of the deceased is recorded on a central memorial stele or plaque, but the burial plot itself remains without individual marking. Not all cemeteries offer semi-anonymous burials.

What is a quiet burial?

A quiet burial is a funeral without a large ceremony. The burial takes place in a small, simple setting. Relatives can be present on request. Unlike an anonymous burial, the grave can be marked with a name. We offer quiet burials from 950 euros.

What documents are required?

The following documents are needed for the burial: the death certificate (issued by the registry office), the identity card of the deceased, the birth certificate, the marriage certificate for married persons, and the medical certificate of death (issued by the doctor). Our partner funeral director will help you obtain all necessary documents and handles the official formalities.

What is funeral pre-arrangement?

With a funeral pre-arrangement contract, you can determine all details of your burial according to your personal wishes during your lifetime. You decide on the type of burial, the location and the financial framework. The funds are deposited for a designated purpose and are protected from access by third parties. This relieves your relatives and ensures your wishes are respected.

Who has the duty to arrange a burial in NRW?

Under the NRW Burial Act, the following persons are obligated to arrange a burial, in this order: spouse or registered civil partner, adult children, parents, adult siblings, grandparents and adult grandchildren. The person with the duty to arrange the burial must initiate it, but does not necessarily bear the costs. The costs are initially borne by the heir or the estate.

Can you choose the urn?

For an anonymous burial, a simple bio-urn is generally used. This urn is biodegradable and complies with cemetery regulations. If you wish for a special urn, this is possible at an additional cost. However, for an anonymous burial, the choice of urn is less significant as it is not visible after burial.

What happens if there is no one obligated to arrange the burial?

If no person obligated to arrange the burial is available or can be reached, the responsible public order office takes over the organisation of the burial. This so-called official burial is usually carried out as a simple anonymous interment. The costs are initially borne by the municipality but can later be reclaimed from the heirs.
